Chapter 15

It took such an effort to pull herself together and leave that moment. She would have stayed there forever if she could, at the mercy of her feelings—all of which were going haywire. Feelings she’d never truly recognized before. Never let herself feel because she’d never just existed in the moment before. She’d always been on the run, trying to keep one step ahead of the things that wanted to hurt her.

She didn’t want to run anymore. Not from him. That was beyond terrifying, in a way Alexis couldn’t even fathom. She had no idea what it would mean for them beyond this. This they did well. He’d played her body like the finest instrument, bringing her to climax three times, his roughness telling her he wasn’t afraid she’d suddenly break on him.

She’d craved that more than she’d ever thought possible, but that wasn’t enough to give up her own safety for. She needed more than that. She needed assurances she was positive Zedrik couldn’t give her.

He was Asrai, after all. Whatever he felt in the moment was just a glimmer that would fade soon enough. She might be able to tap into it every now and again, getting him to indulge in moments like this where neither of them were thinking with logic and reason.

But now that she’d had a taste, she wanted more. She was always going to want more, something that became abundantly clear to her once the physical connection between them was severed, his softening cock pulling free.

Her breathing was slowly returning to normal, and she felt… vulnerable, in a way she hadn’t in so long. She couldn’t say she cared for it much. Vulnerability was an invitation to be hurt, and she’d somehow let Zedrik in without even realizing she was doing so.

She swallowed, looking away from him, and slid off the counter to start collecting her clothes. Her face was burning, which was just the most ridiculous thing. She wasn’t some blushing maid. Alexis didn’t get embarrassed, and definitely not by sex.

But what happened between them was more than sex. She could admit that to herself, even if she’d never admit it to him.

“We should see if the storm’s calmed down. I want to start searching as soon as it’s passed,” she said, feeling disconnected from her own voice.

She glanced over at Zedrik, making the mistake of meeting his eyes. They were clouded with a confusing—and confused—mix of emotion. As soon as her words sunk in, though, it was as if Zedrik was replaced by some kind of program. Some cut-rate AI that processed her words and gave nothing in return. Just an emotionless, pre-programmed response.

“No more distractions.”

All of the air rushed from her lungs in an instant. Any pride she’d had left, any mercy she might have expected from him, both were completely gone. A distraction. That’s what it was. Just a distraction. They’d gotten in over their heads—had completely lost their minds—and while he didn’t seem to regret it, he was acting like…

Like exactly what he was.
